How to Create Your Target Market!

By on

One of the first steps when building your business online and building your brand is to create your Target Market.

This is also called your customer avatar.

Why do we want to do this?

Well, as the saying goes “When you’re marketing to everyone, you’re marketing to No One.”

It all comes down to your message to the marketplace.  If your message is to broad, it will not relate to anyone and nobody will buy.

We need to speak the same language as our target market.

For example…You wouldn’t speak the same to a stay at home mom as you would a big CEO of a corporation…right?!

You need to figure out who are you selling to?

Why should they buy your product?

What will they gain by doing business with you?

Without your ideal customer avatar your marketing will be generic and ineffective.

How to Craft Your Perfect Customer Avatar

A customer avatar is an individual with a name, a picture and specific demographic and other characteristics. An avatar is not a real specific person; it is a composite of characteristics of many real people.

You are describing your target market, the people that you want most as your customers and will most likely to buy from you again and again. It needs to be specific and focused.

A common mistake many people make is to create a customer avatar that is too broad and general.

Your avatar needs to speak to your ideal customer in a way that when they do come upon your website or ads, it’s almost like you’ve read their mind.

You’ve identified their pain points, fears, frustrations, desires and dreams. As a result of going through this process, you will come up with copy and sales messages that can be used on your website and other marketing material.

What Information Goes Into A Customer Avatar?

You need to really take the time to get into their heads.

  • Experience/expertise
  • strengths
  • weaknesses
  • demographics- age, sex, marital status, kids
  • values
  • goals/dreams
  • what kind of pain are they in
  • social and cultural environments
  • hair, eye color, you name it – yes that’s right.  We want to make this person seem real!
  • Favorite Books or movies
  • School they attended
  • occupation
  • income

The key here is to brain dump everything you can about this avatar into a story.

Step into his or her shoes, see life through their eyes and feel her emotions as you write a story as her, not as YOU. I would even find a picture of this person so you get a a good visual.

I have a picture of my avatar above my desk with her story and when I write, I write as if I’m speaking to her.  If I make a video, I make the video with her in mind.

A little hint for you network marketers….

Target network marketers.  This might sounds odd but network marketers don’t stay in their company on average more than 3 months.  Their company either goes out of business or they quit.  Plus they already like the industry!  No having to talk them into how awesome it is!!
